Before coming to UIUC, I got both my bachelor degree (2005) and master degree (2007) from Department of Computer Science, Tsinghua University. My research interests include Text Mining, Information Retrieval, Data Mining, Machine Learning, and Natural Language Processing.

I am an assistant professor at the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Information Science (by courtsey) at University of Colorado Boulder. You can learn more about my life trajectory here. My main research interests include Language and social dynamics. The effect of wording, how language influences social interaction, e.g., persuasion and information sharing. The ecosystem of ideas, how ideas relate to each other and evolve over time, e.g., idea relations and lost in propagation. Multi-community engagement, how a person interacts with multiple communities and how communities relate to each other, e.g., users' life trajectories, community genealogy, and migrant integration in urbanization. Human-centered machine learning, how we can use machine learning to empower humans and augment human intelligence such as enhancing creativity and avoiding behavioral biases, e.g., creative writing with a machine in the loop.

I am currently a senior research scientist at Snapchat working on research projects about computer vision and deep learning. I have finished my Ph.D. in Computer Science at UC Berkeley in 2015, advised by Professor Trevor Darrell. My research focuses on computer vision and machine learning. In particular, my Ph.D. thesis is about fine-grained categorization. Before coming to US, I graduated from Tsinghua University with a B.S. in Computer Science in June 2010, working with Professor Jie Tang. I have spent summers at Facebook AI Research, working with Dr. Lubomir Bourdev. I am a researcher and software developer of natural language processing, information retrieval, and machine learning technologies, with a special interest in automatic design, construction, and optimization of arbitrary complex intelligent information systems such as question answering systems and decision support systems. I joined Google Research in 2017. I obtained my Ph.D. degree from Carnegie Mellon University in 2017, under the supervision of Prof. Eric Nyberg. I obtained M.S. and B.E. degrees from Tsinghua University, China, in 2011 and 2009 respectively, supervised by Prof. Jie Tang and Prof. Juanzi Li. Previously, I had internships with Dr. Chris Burges at Microsoft Research in 2016, Dr. Ying Li and Dr. James Cai at Roche Translational & Clinical Research Center in 2013, and Dr. Keke Cai and Dr. Zhong Su at IBM Research - China between 2010 and 2011. I am also a co-founder of Cognistx LLC (formerly, Inphome LLC).

I am an assistant professor of Computer Science and Technology at Zhejiang University. My research focuses on mining deep knowledge from large-scale social and information networks. I obtained my Ph.D. degree from Tsinghua University in 2016, advised by Jie Tang and Juanzi Li. During my Ph.D. career, I have been visiting Cornell University (working with John Hopcroft) in 2012, and University of Leuven (working with Marie-Francine Moens) in 2013. I also fortunately have Yizhou Sun from UCLA as my external advisor.
